The skills of a mechanic and the touch of an artist are the traits of an Auto Body Technician. This 9-month program is designed to train students in the fundamentals, knowledge and skills involved in the repair of today’s high tech automobiles.

Students are taught the use of hand and power tools, metal working and filling dents, welding, refinishing and spot repair, replacing parts, estimating, door and window repair, insurance claim procedures, and safety procedures. Students have the opportunity to use state of the art equipment in frame measuring and straightening and refinishing including downdraft heated spray booth and fresh-air supplied painting. Students will be learning cutting edge repair procedures with the latest high tech equipment in an all new facility, promoting a professional learning environment needed to keep pace with today’s rapidly changing automotive technology.

The Salina Tech Auto Body Program is a National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NATEF) Certified program. The instructors are ASE certified. Additional training from the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) is available. I-CAR offers advanced training in the areas of collision and plastic repair and finish matching.

Enrollment is open to post-secondary students and secondary students who qualify. High school students should contact their school counselor for more information. This program is approved for Veteran’s benefits.

Students have the option of working toward an Associate in Applied Science degree. Salina Tech has articulation agreements with several degree granting institutions.

                                                    Curriculum

First Semester
CR 100 Orientation
This course provides a detailed introduction to the field of collision repair. Personal safety procedures are discussed and demonstrated. Emphasis will be placed on the proper handling of hazardous and non hazardous waste materials as mandated by state, federal, and local laws. Tool identification and safety along with basic auto construction are also introduced.

CR 120 Non-Structural Repair I
Upon the completion of this course student will be able to use basic metal working skills to repair damaged panels back to their original shape. Plastic repair procedures along with the replacement and adjustment of moveable glass are also learned. The removal, replacement and adjustment of interior and exterior panels and basic welding are areas the student should master.

CR 160 Refinishing I

This course will give the student basic knowledge and skill in automotive refinishing. Basic procedures, safety, and product knowledge are emphasized. Proper surface preparation along with introduction to refinishing equipment will be included. Paint code interpretation, tracking material cost and waste, and application procedures are also part of this course.

CR 140 Structural Repair I

Damage analysis and repair decisions on plastic interior and exterior components including repair techniques using adhesives and welding procedures are taught in this class. Repair of vinyl dash, retexturing and refinishing will be presented, implementing current techniques.

CR 150 Plastics & Adhesives

Damage analysis and repair decisions on plastic interior and exterior components including repair techniques using adhesives and welding procedures are taught in this class.

CR 190 Estimating / Damage / Analysis I

This course emphasizes the importance of writing accurate estimates and analyzing collision damage in the collision industry. Estimates are generated by hand and/or computer. Hand written estimates use crash estimating guides while computer estimates use the appropriate software. Writing and reading repair orders is also included in this course.

Second Semester
CR 290 Estimating / Damage /Analysis II
This course helps the student to thoroughly analyze collision damage by the use of electronic and mechanical measuring equipment. Practice estimates will be written on various shop projects. Live work is emphasized.

CR 122 Non-Structural Repair II
This is an advanced course that takes the skills learned in CR-120 to the next level which is applying those skills in a non-mockup delivery. The student is exposed to limited customer work. CR-120 is a prerequisite for this course.

CR 162 Refinishing II
The prerequisite to this course is CR160. This course is an advanced course introducing the students refinishing using live customers work. Projects of live work expose the student to spot repairs and overall refinishing. Topcoat problems and defects are corrected which aids in the students problem solving ability. Color matching skills are developed by introducing color theory and tinting skills for solid and metallic color matching.

CR 142 Structural Repair II
The prerequisite for this course is CR 140 Structural Repair. This course is an advanced course exposing the student to the next level which is the introduction to non-mockup vehicle repair.

CR 145 ASE/Job Prep
This course will utilize  everything learned in the collision repair program for maximum productivity and job success. Information includes, overall preparation of obtaining and maintaining a career in the auto collision industry. Proper procedures for writing resumes , job applications, cover letters etc. are covered in this course. Professional communication, continued training options as well as introduction to ASE testing and certification and I –Car continued training information will be covered.

Career Placement
Each student who completes a program will be assisted by the department instructors in securing desirable employment.  While Salina Tech graduates have historically enjoyed a high rate of placement, the school makes no guarantees regarding job placement.
