Curriculum
First Semester
RF 105 Basic
Fundamentals & Cycles of Refrigeration
This section covers the theory and operation of the basic refrigeration
cycle, refrigerant metering devices, including capillary tubes,
thermostatic expansion, and automatic expansion valves; basic sheet
metal and math.

110 Basic Electricity & Electrical Components
The course covers theory, operation, and construction of controls and
circuits using capacitors, relays, switches, and control devices. Series
and parallel circuits, schematic diagram reading, use of meters and
electrical measuring devices, system check out procedures, and volt
meter and Ohm meter troubleshooting methods are included.
Second Semester
RF 115 Domestic &
Commercial Refrigeration
Theory, operation and construction of various types of refrigerators,
freezers, icemakers, commercial walk-in and reach-in refrigerators and
freezers are covered. Complete service analysis on all types of systems,
components wiring analysis by use of meters, schematics, and systematic
troubleshooting and repair procedure is taught.

125 Summer & Winter Air Conditioning
The course includes theory, operation, and repair of gas and electrical
furnaces. Instruction includes troubleshooting, system analysis, and
repair of window and central air conditioners, compressor identification
and replacement, control components, fan motors, various types of
compressors, proper cleaning, charging and maintenance procedures,
methods and sources for repairs, parts and source alternatives.

Instruction
Assignments such as math, science, computer application, applied
communications and other courses will be integrated as needed throughout
the curriculum. Students will learn about customer relations as well as
pass an EPA test before going into the field.
Enrollment Information
Enrollment for Secondary and Post-Secondary students is based on first
come, first serve by the date the signed application and campus/program
fee is received in Student Services. Students are not considered
enrolled until the application and fee are received. Cost information is
subject to change without notice.
HVAC is open to high school juniors and seniors who qualify and
post-secondary students.
High school students have the option of renting tools from Salina Tech
or purchasing their own. Tools and uniforms are purchased from vendors.
Only a limited number of tool kits are available. Enrollment does not
guarantee availability of rental tools.
Career Placement
Each student who completes a program will be assisted by the department
instructors in securing desirable employment. While Salina Tech
graduates have historically enjoyed a high rate of placement, the school
does not guarantee job placement.
